Dr. Karen S. Daughtry, the Educational Director of the Alonzo A. Daughtry Memorial Day Care Center has been at the helm of the center’s successful operation since its inception in late 1969 when the center was founded by The House of the Lord Church as a result of a community outreach program in which residents of the community expressed a need for quality child care services.
Housed in the Fellowship Hall of the church, in early 1971 the Agency for Child Development was approached regarding the possibility of funding. However, after numerous inquiries and because of the lack of response and follow up of the , now promise to review the program by City officials, Dr. Daughtry, along with members of the Board of Directors staged a peaceful protest in the office of then Commissioner Georgia L McMurry.
The Commissioner, unaware that the appeals for funding consideration had been ignored and seeing the legitimacy of the request ordered a reversal of prior actions, thus paving the way for retroactive funding. Educational consultants were assigned to assist the program though the process of purchasing needed equipment and the hiring of additional staff.
In 1972, the program, now located in the Y.W.C.A., was licensed by the Department of Health and has continued over the years to actualize its motto” Nurturing and Educating the Leaders of Tomorrow”, The center’s comprehensive curriculum and confidence that every child should be challenged reach their highest potential is evident in the philosophy, mission and execution of the goals of the program.
